Let’s greet a new member of HFWR’s Writers Club KARIN VAN BREEMEN from the Netherlands and her wonderful story about her hometown Leiden and a typical Dutch hofje. Enjoy reading this essay written in Russian and English, and you will dive into the atmosphere of love and tenderness which was going through Karin’s childhood.

* * *Leiden, city of old buildings and 35 hofjes. But one hofje gives me beloved memories, het Tevelingshofje.

A sister of my grandmother lived there, and when I was a little girl, me and my parents always went to the hofje when we stayed at my grandmother. I enjoyed being at the hofje, aunt was sweet and it was enjoyable, playing in the garden. Around the garden there are houses and only one entry and exit, a big gate.

Hofjes always are in the centre of a city, but when you enter the garden, you go back in history. At the hofje it’s silent and you don’t hear the noise of the city.

When I was 6 years old, my aunt moved and that was the end of going to the hofje. The hofje was a beloved memory as much from a childhood. I saw the hofje back in 2009, and when I was there, I knew my love for histoy began at the hofje where I played.

*There is no English word for “hofje” for it’s typical Dutch, at the Wikipedia page I found this, Дворик (нидерл. Hofje, Хофье)
