It is as hard to speak about this ancient Russian town as to put a part of my soul into some small paragraphs.

Мне кажется, на примере истории СМОЛЕНСКА можно изучать всю историю России. Он - один из древнейших городов нашего государства, в этом году ему исполнилось 1150 лет.

I think that you can learn the Russian History with the History of SMOLENSK– one of the oldest cities of our country, which is 1150 years old this year.

Впервые о Смоленске упоминается в 863 году в «Повести временных лет».

Smolensk was first mentioned in 863 in The Primary Chronicle (Tale of Bygone Years).

В истории Российского государства Смоленск всегда играл важную стратегическую роль, поэтому получил имя «ключ-город». В разное время через него пытались прорваться с Запада поколения завоевателей, а потом, разбитые, возвращались по старой смоленской дороге. Смоленск помнит воинов Речи Посполитой, солдат и офицеров наполеоновских и немецких армий. Вряд ли какая-то другая земля так обильно сдобрена кровью защитников.

Smolensk has always played a significant strategic role in History of the Russian State. That is why it is also called as a “key city”. At different times the numerous generations of occupants from the West wanted to break through the city, and then, destroyed, went back along the old Smolensk road. Smolensk can remember the warriors of Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth, the soldiers and officers of Napoleon and Nazi armies. There is probably no country which would be so covered with blood of its defenders.

Каждому, кто хочет не просто изучить Россию по книгам, а попытаться понять русскую душу, стоит приехать сюда. Стоит посмотреть на Днепр и представить, как в прошлом тысячелетии здесь сплавлялись купцы, направляясь из«варяг в греки». Стоит коснуться крепостной стены, являющейся одним из самых прекрасных ожерелий центральной России. Стоит пройтись по улочкам и зайти в церкви XII века и Смоленский собор, посмотреть на чудотворный список иконы Смоленской Одигитрии.

Everyone who wants not only to learn Russia with books but also try to understand the Russian soul, it is worth visiting this place. It is worth watching the Dnieper River and then to imagine how the merchants rafted a thousand years ago along the trade route from the Varangians to the Greeks. It is worth touching the walls of the fortress which is one of the beautiful pearls of the Central Russia. It is worth walking along the streets and visiting the Churches of the 12th century and The Smolensk Cathedral (The Cathedral Church of the Assumption) to watch the miracle-working icon of Hodegetria (Virgin Mary, Our Lady of the Way) of Smolensk.

И просто стоит остановиться и поговорить со смолянином – мы знаем множество легенд про каждый уголок нашего небольшого, но стойкого города.

And it would be a good idea if you could just stop and talk with a Smolensk dweller – we know a lot of legends about every corner of our small but firm city.
